(RNN) - Swimmer Diana Nyad successfully swam from Cuba to Florida, becoming the first person to do without the aid of a shark cage.

Nyad, 64, swam 103 miles in 53 hours. This was her fifth attempt to do so.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 10-7 in favor of President Barack Obama's proposal for a limited military strike against the Syrian government. This comes after U.S. officials said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces used chemical weapons against his own people. Several Republican leaders, including House Speaker John Boehner, have said they support the president's call for action.

Ariel Castro was found dead in his cell. Castro, who was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years for kidnapping and raping three Cleveland women for 10 years, hanged himself.
