Oahu prison inmate's suicide is 5th this year

HONOLULU (AP) - Officials say an inmate at the Oahu Community Correctional Center hanged himself over the weekend.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports it's the fifth suicide this year at an Oahu prison.

The medical examiner's office says Brian Kim died of asphyxia due to hanging and ruled the death a suicide.

Department of Public Safety officials say the 48-year-old homeless man was alone in his cell when he was found dead on Saturday.

He was awaiting trial in the July 12 fatal stabbing of another homeless man at a Kailua park. He pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and his trial was scheduled for next month.

The medical examiner's office says Kim also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.
