KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A 46 year-old woman is dead after she was run over by her own pickup truck in her Kaneohe driveway.
Honolulu Police said they responded to a home at 47-706 Halemanu Street in the Ahuimanu area at about 2 p.m. after calls from neighbors. "They heard a truck that had crashed into a house, and when the neighbor came out to see, he saw a female laying in the driveway," said HPD Lt. Robert Towne.
According to investigators, the woman was just returning home after picking up some food. The truck, a Toyota Tundra pickup, began rolling from the top of the steep driveway as the woman was apparently unlocking the gate to the property.
"It appears that the victim, who lives up there, was run over by her own vehicle," said Towne.
The woman was taken in extremely critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where she died soon afterward.
The truck continued down the driveway and went off and embankment and over a stone wall before coming to rest next to a neighboring home, causing minor damage.
Police examined the truck, trying to figure out how it began rolling.
"It is an automatic, but its unclear at this point if she was trying to get back into the vehicle, say if it was rolling, or why she was by the vehicle afterwards, but we do know she was run over by her own vehicle," said Towne.
The woman's identity was not immediately released.
Because the incident happened on private property, the fatality will not be included as part of Oahu's traffic death toll.
