Oahu intermediate school principal wins award

HONOLULU (AP) - A windward Oahu intermediate school principal has been named National Middle Level Principal of the Year by MetLife and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

The state Department of Education says Sheena Alaiasa of King Intermediate School is the first principal from Hawaii to receive the award.

She was honored Thursday during a surprise student assembly attended by Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi.

NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti says Alaiasa has done remarkable work to create a safe, personalized environment in which all students feel welcome and valued.

More than 600 students in the grades 7 and 8 attend King Intermediate in Kaneohe.

Eight elementary schools feed into King. They are Ahuimanu, Benjamin Parker, Heeia, Kahaluu, Kaneohe, Kapunahala, Puohala and Waiahole.
