LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - Hazardous materials officials on Kauai are reviewing the contents of a leaky fuel tank that washed up on a beach.
The Garden Island reports about 5 gallons of liquid was found inside the 100-gallon aluminum fuel tank.
Surfrider Kauai's Japanese tsunami marine debris coordinator Carl Berg says the liquid smelled like diesel fuel.
Berg says Japanese characters on the side of the tank and a large amount of marine growth led him to suspect that the tank originated from the Japanese tsunami of March 2011.
The tank was found on Waipouli Beach near the Courtyard by Marriott Kauai at Coconut Beach hotel.
Kapaa firefighters and a hazardous materials crew responded to the scene.
