Volunteers haul marine debris from Kauai beach

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A 600-pound device used to lure fish was included in more than 1,500 pounds of marine debris collected over the weekend from Hanamaulu Beach on Kauai.

The Garden Island reports 35 volunteers on Saturday removed the debris.

The 5-foot diameter "fish aggregating device" washed up on the rocks on the north end of Hanamaulu Bay.

Robert Zelkovsky, Kauai Chapter president of the Surfrider Foundation, says in an announcement that the device probably had been placed two miles off Kauai's coast.

Zelkovsky says the float was rolled off the rocks and towed to the beach.

It was loaded onto a truck and taken to a recycling facility.
