HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A man in his forties was killed early Thursday morning when the car he was driving veered off the Likelike Highway, went up an embankment and then flipped over, according to police investigators.

Paramedics say the crash, which happened at around 2:55 a.m. near the Kula Kolea Drive intersection, also seriously injured the man's wife.

Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department says that the married couple was on their way home after fishing in the Hau'ula area when the accident occurred. The man's wife was reportedly sleeping in the back seat of the couple's Saturn SUV when the car flipped over.

The male driver of the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, police officials say. His wife was taken to the hospital and is now listed in stable condition.

Lanes of the Likelike were shut down by Honolulu Police Department officials just before the Wilson Tunnel a short time after the crash, but have since been reopened.

Investigators say they are not looking into speed as a factor in the crash and that it is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved. The man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police say.
