Multi-million dollar Honolulu airport makeover begins

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The state is spending $750 million to give the Honolulu International Airport a major makeover.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Tuesday announced his "New Day Work Project" is moving ahead. The staff held a groundbreaking ceremony for a round of upgrades at the airport, including a new Aloha Air Cargo facility, an employee parking lot and the relocation of the interisland terminal cargo facility.

These are the first extensive improvements at the airport in 20 years.

"The key to the prosperity of the state is the capacity to have an airport system that brings our guests in and has them leave with a smile on their faces on both ends," said Gov. Abercrombie.

The New Day Work Projects are funded through revenues and user fees collected by Hawaii airports.
