Colobus monkey born at Panaewa Rainforest Zoo

KAULUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - The Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens has a new attraction.

West Hawaii Today reports a female colobus monkey gave birth Aug. 10.

The protective parents are Mindy and Moe.

Colobus monkeys rarely descend from trees and zoo officials don't know if the newborn is male or female.

Colobus monkeys are black and white and have long, bushy tails. The baby is pure white but is expected to turn color when it reaches 5 weeks old.

Officials at the zoo south of Hilo say colobus monkeys are native to Africa and were hunted extensively for their fur and meat.
