Caregiver sentenced for defrauding dying man

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (AP) - A woman who stole money from the accounts of a terminally ill man she was hired to care for has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports 54-year-old Terri Lee K. Pascua on Monday also was ordered to repay $16,672 to First Hawaiian Bank.

Pascua in February pleaded guilty to bank fraud for forging a Kau man's signature on blank checks she had stolen from him

Federal prosecutors say the man hired Pascua in January 2012. Investigators say that within a month, Pascua had tried to steal $19,780 from the man's accounts and succeeded in taking $16,672.

The man died later in 2012.
