Honolulu mayor appoints Soon as chief of staff

HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has appointed the president of a consulting firm to be his chief of staff.

Caldwell announced Ray Soon's appointment on Tuesday. He will begin on Sept. 3.

Caldwell touts Soon's experience and leadership in the public and private sectors.

Soon is currently president of consulting firm Solutions Pacific. He has previously served as director of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and vice president of community relations at Kamehameha Schools.

He earned a bachelor's degree in city and regional planning from the University of Hawaii and a master's degree in city planning from Harvard University.
