American Samoa pays more than $900K in back wages

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) - American Samoa has paid more than $900,000 in back wages to some 250 employees, mostly police officers.

The payments were made to settle charges resulting from a U.S. Department of Labor investigation.

The department says some territory employees weren't paid for all of their overtime hours. It says some overtime hours were paid at a straight-time rate instead of 1 and one-half times regular pay as required by federal law.

American Samoa Treasurer Falemao Pili says checks for the back wages ranged from $4 to $22,500.

American Samoa must also adopt a plan to correct policies and practices as part of the settlement.

The territory included funds for the payments in a $5 million supplemental budget appropriation for the current fiscal year.
