NAWILIWILI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 21-year old Kalaheo man is dead after being shot by police last night.

A county spokesperson said, police had been making a routine check for criminal activity at around 10:40 p.m. in the Nawiliwili jetty area when they came upon a gathering of adults and juveniles.

According to police officials, they came upon the Kalaheo man in a parked car holding a pair of firearms. Police say, they told him to drop his weapons. Then, the man threw one of his guns out of the car but held on to the other and pointed it toward the officers.

Police say they shot at the man to prevent the threat.

The man died following the incident.

No one else at the scene was injured. Officials say, the four officers involved have been placed on three-day administrative leave while police investigate.

"Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased," Kauai Police Chief Daryl Perry said in a news release. "I want to assure the public that this shooting will be investigated completely and vigorously."
