COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier wasn't happy with his team's offensive showing on Saturday. Then again, it's usually difficult to move the ball against Gamecocks All-American Jadeveon Clowney.
The South Carolina junior defensive end had at least two sacks in the two-hour workout at Williams-Brice Stadium, a week after sitting out a scrimmage with a bruised shoulder. He also came in virtually untouched on several other plays to pressure Gamecock quarterbacks Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson.
"Our defensive team was a lot better today than they were
in the first scrimmage," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "They did a lot of good things. The offense had a few good plays here
and there, but a lot of backwards plays – a lot of penalties, a lot of sacks,
things like that. Disappointing for some of the guys, but a lot of the guys
competed well. Some didn't compete very well. We've got a long way to go.
Hopefully we can make some strides between now and a week from Thursday."
"We have some pass rushers here," added defensive
coordinator Lorenzo Ward. "Everybody thinks it's just Jadeveon, but we've got
some other guys who can get to the quarterback. Hopefully we can do it during
the season. Jadeveon is a special athlete. He deserves all the praise he gets."
Clowney played just two series before watching the rest of the session from the sidelines. Shaw's scrimmage ended after he banged his thumb on a helmet and went to the locker room to get it looked at.
Shaw came out with ice on his right, throwing hand. Spurrier did not consider the injury serious.
