HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two bodies have been recovered from the scene of a house fire on the Big Island, according to Hawaii County Fire Department officials.
Officials say the fire broke out at a single family home on Wainaku Street in Hilo just before 1:10 a.m. on Thursday morning. Firefighters first at the scene say the home was fully involved by the time the arrived, and that the roof had already partially collapsed.
Firefighters reported the fire under control by about 1:25 a.m. and extinguished at 2 a.m. Once the flames had been extinguished, crews went inside after reports of possible occupants inside the home and discovered two fatalities within the structure.
At that point, the scene was turned over to fire investigators and Big Island police for further investigation.
The identities of the two people have not yet been released.
Nearly $150,000 dollars in damage was done to the home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
