Motorists brace for traffic as 51,000 return to school today

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Get ready for traffic, and lots of it.

"Starting on Monday, August 26th, approximately 51,900 university, college and private school students will be on the road starting their fall semester," said Director of the Department of Transportation Glenn Okimoto.

The state Department of Transportation has set out to combat the inevitable traffic jams with one of their own: The "Beat the School Jam" campaign.

The initiative consists of two separate components.

"First is our highways division, postponing construction related lane closures during daylight hours, on Oahu's major highways, on Monday, August 26, through Friday, August 30th" said Okimoto.

The second, and perhaps the most helpful to drivers, is the launch of the "Go Akamai" mobile app.

"The website provides critical information Oahu residents need to make informed travel decisions," added Mike Formby, Director of Transportation Services

The app shows traffic conditions, estimated drive times, and live traffic cameras at various roadways on Oahu.

Director Okimoto is urging people to take alternate means of transportation if possible, including taking the bus, biking to work, or signing students up for public or private bus services.  If that isn't a possibility, he stresses to allow more driving time.

The mobile app can be used with Apple and Android devices, and is free to download at the App Store and Google Play.
