BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
LSU's first scrimmage of fall camp was naturally closed to the media, but head coach Les Miles did meet with the press afterwards and shared this information:
Miles described the scrimmage as a situational one, focusing on red zone and tight zone. He said it was roughly 65-70 plays, including special teams. Because the workout was moved indoors because of the weather, there was no punting. Miles said he enjoyed the work, but added it was sloppy with penalties.
Miles provided no stats from the scrimmage at the time of the press conference.
Miles says the first team defense "is very difficult to handle" and that senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger "ran into a defensive end or two."
Miles says Danielle Hunter and Jordan Allen were the first two defensive ends used. When asked about junior end Jermauria Rasco, who has worn a green jersey throughout camp, Miles said "We looked at him."
"What we can do is run the football and throw it with some understanding," Miles said of his offense.
Backup quarterback Anthony Jennings threw the ball 10 of the 16 snaps he was in, according to the coach.
Miles says wide receivers Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham, Travin Dural and Kevin Spears stood out during the scrimmage.
Kenny Hilliard and Alfred Blue ran the ball well, according to the coach. Miles was a bit dismissive of running back Jeremy Hill, saying he "took some snaps", but didn't remember him getting many carries.
Miles added he had no update on Hill's playing status. "As soon as I have information there, I'll bring it forward as fast as I can." He then winked.
Miles also had no update on senior offensive guard Josh Williford, whose career may be over after another reported concussion.
6'3, 245 pound true freshman Melvin Jones from Washington-Marion high school is working predominantly at fullback.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Trey Granier has left the team. Granier apparently had an immediate desire to play, and that wasn't transpiring as he had hoped.
Junior Elliot Porter and true freshman Ethan Pocic continue to battle for the starting spot at center.
True freshman speed demon Jeryl Brazil worked at running back, defensive back, kick returner and punt returner.
Arkansas coach Bret Bielema says he expects a much-scrutinized proposal to prohibit snapping the ball until at least 10 seconds run off the 40-second play clock to pass when the NCAA playing rules oversight panel...More >>
