Rat to blame for large Downtown power outage

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A rat is being blamed for a power outage that affected more than 2,500 customers in Downtown Honolulu early Wednesday morning, according to officials with the Hawaiian Electric Company.

HECO officials say the outage, primarily in an area near the Pali Safeway and Longs stores, started at around 1:20 a.m., when a rat got into some of it's equipment on the ground and caused a short circuit.

Viewers told Hawaii News Now that the Kukui Plaza Buildings were also in the dark because of the outage.

Officials reportedly had power completely restored by about 2 a.m.
