PUNA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii Island police charged a Puna man and his son in connection with what started as a case of domestic abuse in Pahoa Tuesday.

Puna patrol officers responded to the abuse report on Saturday, August 10, where the 48-year-old suspect Christopher Thomas Gonsalves of Pahoa struck and threatened an officer and then fled the scene. Gonsalves was located and arrested Sunday and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives continued the investigation.

At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Gonsalves was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, assaulting a police officer and abuse of a family/household member. His bail was set at $22,000.

Detectives also arrested 21-year-old Gordon A.E. Gonsalves of Pahoa Tuesday morning and charged him at 1:30 p.m. with second-degree hindering prosecution for using force against an officer to allow his father to get away. His bail was set at $500.

Both men are being held at the cellblock pending their initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, August 14.
