LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - Kauai County Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. says he plans to select a site for a proposed residential adolescent drug treatment center by the end of the year.
A recent study conducted for the county recommended Kauai build a center with six to eight beds.
The study says seven Kauai adolescents were admitted to an Oahu drug treatment center between July 2012 and January.
But many families can't afford to send their children to residential programs on Oahu. Many families are also reluctant to send their children to a treatment facility away from Kauai.
The study says most adolescents treated for substance abuse should receive outpatient services. Only a few should receive residential treatment.
Carvalho said in a statement Friday he intends to move the project forward as quickly as possible.
