HONOLULU (AP) - Kauai County officials say vandalism is the reason behind a decision to close a popular beach park at night.
Starting Monday, Hanamaulu Beach Park will be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.
Director of Parks and Recreation Lenny Rapozo says in an announcement that community members no longer feel safe in the park and a new gate will lock up the entrance.
County officials say vandals damaged the park in June a few days after it was cleaned. Officials also say pavilion due to be demolished is attracting vagrants.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports day use of the park will continue.
