Car plunges into Kamanaiki Stream

KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A car with four people inside landed upside down in the Kamanaiki Stream in Kalihi Valley around 6 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses on Wailele Street say the Toyota Corolla came from the top of the hill and went through the bushes at the end of the street.

Bystanders helped get three people out of the car before fire crews arrived and pulled the last woman out on a stretcher.

Officials do not believe the injuries are life threatening.

Melvin Ross lives at the end of Wailele Street. He says if he parked his truck where he usually does, the car would have hit it. But, today for some reason he pulled farther forward, resulting in a near miss.

"I was in the house and I heard a big boom. Sounded like my garage was falling down. When I ran out all I heard was people saying call 911 so I ran outside here, took a look straight down here and had a car down in the ditch."
