Study: hula has heart health, spiritual benefits

HONOLULU (AP) - A study says hula is good for the heart and soul.

According to research presented by the University of Hawaii medical school and the Queen's Medical Center, learning hula can lower blood pressure and help rehabilitate patients after heart attacks or cardiac surgery.

Mele Look, an investigator on the studies, says there's also evidence hula has emotional and spiritual benefits.

The medical school's department of Native Hawaiian Health presented the research at the American Psychological Association's convention in Honolulu Thursday.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the research attempted to evaluate how hula can help improve health among Native Hawaiians, whose death rate from heart disease is roughly twice that of the general population in the state.
