WAILEA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A swimmer is in the hospital Wednesday afternoon following a shark attack at Ulua Beach in Wailea, Maui.

Officials say at about 8:45 a.m., a female was 30 ft. from the shore in about 10 ft. of water when she was bitten by a shark in her upper torso.

She underwent surgery at the Maui Memorial Medical Center. No other information about the victim has been released yet.

In response, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the County of Maui closed off the area a mile in both directions, from Polo Beach to the area fronting the Mana Kai Maui resort.

Both the state and county have jet skis in the water as well as state ATV beach patrols. Signs have also been posted warning people not to go into the water.

Officials will evaulate the situation again on Thursday before deciding to reopen the  beach.
