(HawaiiNewsNow) - The Aloha Project -- a charity organization developed by six young business professionals in Honolulu -- is working with Shine on Sierra Leone -- a non-profit organization devoted to improving education and health in Sierra Leone -- on the largest initiative to finance the construction and startup of a secondary school in the West African nation. On August 3, an 1980s-themed fundraiser "Top Fun" at the Battleship Missouri Memorial will benefit the Muddy Lotus Academy to fulfill a great necessity for a secondary school in an area devastated by civil war.
The Aloha Project's board of directors is a close-knit group of accomplished business mavens, who created the status pending non-profit with a commitment to making a difference in a wide range of causes and inspiring change through fundraising projects in Hawaii and around the world.
Thrust into the American mainstream by the 2006 award-winning film "Blood Diamond," Sierra Leone is still recovering from the desolation that occurred during the Sierra Leone Civil War that ended in 2002. The Aloha Project members saw an opportunity to carry out their mission to assist the children of Sierra Leone. With the idea that education is the key to a better future, they are raising funds to finance the Muddy Lotus Academy for grades seven through 12, which is slated to begin construction in late October of this year.
"Top Fun" will be held on Saturday aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will include food, wine and beer. The event will also feature local artists and entertainment vendors including a Material Girl Beauty Bar, t-shirt cutting, dance games, DJs, b-boys, a silent auction and much more. The debut of this inaugural event will allow other business professionals and residents of Hawaii to support The Aloha Project and their mission.
