TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Two men attempting to remove asbestos from an abandoned north Toledo home Wednesday discovered a partially decomposed body, Toledo Police say.
The body was found around 11 a.m. Wednesday in the basement of a home in the 400 block of Streicher Street.
Police say the crew saw a blanket near the bottom of a stairway. After they tried to kick the blanket out of the way, the workers discovered human legs. The men immediately left the house and called police.
The home was set to be demolished after the asbestos was removed.
Police say they are investigating the case as a homicide and awaiting autopsy results to determine the person's identity and cause of death. They believe the body has been there for more than a week.
"They'll be able to tell exactly how tall the person was and estimate a weight, you know. They can tell by some of the physical attributes, you know, the race, if it was a man or a woman. Stuff that they can do much more definitively than we can here at the scene," said Sgt. Tim Noble with the Toledo Police Department.
The scientific investigation unit was in the process of combing through the home for more evidence.
Police say they will check their list of missing persons to see if they have a match.
