Former Monroe track star hits NCAA transfer roadblock

Two years ago, after a championship track career at Monroe, Maikea Davis decided to take her talents to Western Kentucky University.

"It felt like home, like the whole vibe," Davis says about her decision. "It felt like it was the place I needed to be."

But after two seasons as a Hilltopper, Davis found those feelings had changed.

"Athletic wise, I needed to be going to the next level," she says. "I needed to find somewhere that was going to get me there."

Davis decided she wanted to leave WKU and transfer elsewhere.

It wouldn't be that simple though, as she found out when she informed her coaches.

Davis says she was given a list of nearly 60 schools WKU track coach Erik Jenkins wouldn't allow her to transfer to, including her top choice Austin Peay State University.

She and her family were concerned they would have to consider going above her coaches.

"We would have to go to another level, and get the proper stuff to get it done," Davis says.

Eventually, after several conversations, WKU released Davis, who has made the move to Austin Peay. She'll run the 200 and 100 meters for the Governors this season

Jenkins provided no comment when WALB asked about Davis' transfer restrictions, only saying the team provided Davis with a full release, with restrictions on the Sun Belt Conference, where WKU currently plays, and Conference USA, which the Hilltoppers join in 2014.

It's a growing trend many athletes are finding out about the hard way, when coaches limit the players' options if they wish to transfer.

Davis' new head coach  says coaches should release players if they want out.

"I'm pretty sure she's not the first and she's not the last Division I athlete who's going to feel they want to finish up somewhere else than where they started," says Austin Peay head track coach Valerie Brown.

Davis is now back on the track, ready to run with no roadblocks in her way.

"I'm ready to go," she smiles.
