LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A motor vehicle crash on Maui killed a Lahaina man last night.
19-year old Chanse Uyeda was driving a 2003 black moped in the southbound direction on Lower Honoapi`ilani Road near Ho`ohui Road. His moped crossed the center line and collided with a 2011 Ford Fusion driven by a 37-year old male visitor from Virginia.
Uyeda was rushed to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he later died. He was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the car and a passenger, his wife, were not injured. Both occupants were wearing seat belts.
An investigation is ongoing to determine is speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. This is Maui's ninth traffic fatality this year as compared to 15 at the same time last year.
