$1M to endow Hawaii social work professorship

HONOLULU (AP) - The University of Hawaii is announcing a new endowed professorship at the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work.

The Richard S. Takasaki Endowed Professorship is being funded by a $1 million gift from the late Richard and Rose Takasaki.

The university said Friday the position will be held by a full professor in the School of Social Work. It will be awarded on the basis of scholarly achievement in the field of social policy.

Richard Takasaki held various positions during his career, including chief of research and statistics for the state, director of finance for Honolulu as well as UH acting president. He taught social work courses at the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work.

Rose Takasaki was a teacher at Manoa Elementary, Laupahoehoe and Hilo Intermediate School.
