A brush fire near Hulikoa Drive in Kona has reportedly burned nearly 1,000 acres so far.
The Hawaii Fire Department says the fire started at around 11:15 a.m. Saturday mauka of Queen Kaahumanu Highway. Crews arrived to the scene and found the brush fire engulfing trees and tall grass on the northeast side of Hulikoa Drive, running into Kaiminani Drive.
At about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, officials said no homes had been threatened. Fire crews continued to monitor the brush fire overnight, and are still working to put out the flames Sunday.
Fire crews say the brush fire has not been declared under control. Dozers and resources are working to contain it.
The cause of the blaze is unknown.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and to be on the lookout for emergency vehicles and personnel working alongside roadsides.
