Local Connection: Today Show in Hawaii

By: Rick Blangiardi

The Today Show landed in Hawaii last week and put on an impressive performance as it showcased our beautiful state to the rest of the country.

Productions such as these are not easy and do not happen overnight. We were honored to help the today show with logistics, news promotion and live shots, but NBC is to be commended for making the commitment to send dozens of producers, photographers and engineers, as well as Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Natalie Morales and Willie Geist to devote three hours to our islands.

Al Roker was called away to the deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma and the rest of the week took a tragic turn, as other pieces of today's "Great American Adventure" had to be scuttled or downsized.

But the Hawaii piece turned out wonderfully.

Special thanks go to the staff of the Royal Hawaiian to accommodate an event that took over their hotel grounds for several days, and the tricky maneuver of going live between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Hawaii time. The crowds were enthusiastic, security was tight and the logistics were impeccable.

It was a wonderful Hawaiian postcard to the folks on the mainland who no doubt are clamoring to plan their next vacations. We owe the today show a debt of gratitude.
