Local Connection: MRC Greenwood Legacy

There will be much analysis and debate in the coming months about the legacy of University of Hawaii president MRC Greenwood now that she has announced she is leaving.

Let's start with the positives.

As regents' chairman Eric Martinson pointed out, she has made great strides for the university system. He concluded correctly that she helped the university through a horrible recession and kept the quality up despite state spending cuts.

The economic impact of the University of Hawaii system totaled more than $3.6 billion last year, with more than half of all university expenditures spent locally.

She certainly wasn't perfect. The wonder blunder may not have been her fault but her performance in front of the state senate committee looking into the fiasco showed her to be defensive and not all that politically astute.

But she wanted to make the university a better place than when she first arrived and that she has accomplished.

Hopefully President Greenwood hands the baton to someone even more skilled than she to lead our university for many years to come.
