City proposes $1.8 million HUD repayment

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

City officials have proposed paying $1.88 million dollars to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of a settlement over a demand that an $8 million grant given to Wahiawa nonprofit ORI be returned.

In June, HUD accused the city of lax oversight and asked for all of the grant money to be returned.

The offer, described in a letter delivered to HUD officials Thursday and given to Hawaii News Now on Friday morning, involves the city taking over control of one of the facilities run by ORI and working to get another under the control of the city.
