Big Island police issue firearm registration tips

Posted: Updated:

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Police on the Big Island are reminding the public to follow certain procedures when registering firearms.

Before going to the police station, the firearm should be unloaded as it's against the law to transport a loaded firearm. A firearm must be transported in an enclosed container.

Bringing a loaded firearm or ammunition into the police station can result in arrest.

The weapon should be open and visually safe for inspection.

Police said Wednesday the reminder about procedure guidelines for registering a firearm is part of ongoing safety measures.
