Spurrier: I'll stop fighting for stipends only if Obama calls

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Showing how far he's willing to go to provide football and basketball players with a yearly stipend, South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier says he'll quit pushing the plan only if he gets a phone call from one person in particular.

"If President Obama would say, 'Spurrier, you and those coaches need to quit fighting for your players, that they get enough, they get enough full scholarship,' then I'll shut up about it," said Spurrier. "But I just believe that these athletes, because of the enormous amount, just a little bit to help out with their parents watching games and so forth."

Spurrier made his comments at the annual SEC Media Days, the annual gathering of coaches and members of the media.

Spurrier said he and his fellow football coaches once again voted unanimously that players deserve some spending money for themselves and their families.

Spurrier's plan would provide $3,600 to $3,900 a year in spending money for college football and basketball players.

"This is tiny compared to the money that's coming in now," said Spurrier. "I think we all know that."

This is not the first time Spurrier has pushed this plan. Last year at SEC Media Days, Spurrier and his fellow coaches voted 14-0 to ask the league to approve the plan.

The plan has made little progress since then.
