DETROIT (AP) - Just call him Baby Doc.
When Austin Brian Jones was born this week at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, he was the 8,000th baby delivered by Dr. Richard Smith. The Detroit Free Press reports (http://on.freep.com/131MvC9 ) that the almost 8-pound-at birth Austin was the first child of Lauren Hood and her husband Andrew Jones of Detroit.
When Hood learned that she was pregnant, it was natural for her to call the 61-year-old Smith. The obstetrician gynecologist delivered her 24 years ago.
Smith says every birth is special. Others he remembers include twins who were 11 pounds each and a 1-pound girl who later became a mother of twins. Smith delivered them as well.
And if Hood is going to have another baby, she says she will call on Smith again.
