LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A group trying to save a Kauai resort from destruction is circulating a petition that opposes an ordinance change that could make it difficult to rebuild.
The online petition sponsored by Save Coco Palms Committee opposes a draft ordinance approved Tuesday by the Kauai Planning Commission.
The measure would get rid of a provision of a previous ordinance that allows for restoration of the Coco Palms to its condition before it was damaged by a September 1992 hurricane.
The Save Coco Palms Committee says a new group of Hawaii-based investors is preparing to restore the Wailua Beach resort that has become an eyesore on Kauai's busiest corridor.
County Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. in June called for repealing the ordinance and said it was no longer necessary.
