Kauai engineer sues county alleging discrimination

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A 32-year-old senior engineer with Kauai's water department is suing the county alleging he was discriminated against for being too young.

Dustin Lee Moises alleges the discrimination started in 2010 when he says the county's Department of Personnel Services said he shouldn't get a higher salary because of his age.

That year he was moved to another position with a reduction in pay and then downgraded to a waterworks project manager.

The Garden Island newspaper reports Moises is suing for damages equal to the wages and benefits he says he was illegally denied.

The 1999 Kauai High School graduate earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii's civil and environmental engineering school.

Kauai County spokeswoman Mary Daubert says the county doesn't comment on litigation or personnel matters.
