Maui police acquire armored vehicle

WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) - Maui police have a new crime-fighting weapon.

The Maui Police Department has acquired a Lenco Bearcat armored vehicle that will protect the department's Special Response Team.

The Maui News reports Maui County appropriated $280,000 to purchase the Bearcat.

The vehicle carries the ability to repel a .50-caliber projectile. It's also touted for its high maneuverability.

Mayor Alan Arakawa in an announcement says the armored vehicle will help ensure the safety of officers and the citizens in high-risk operations.
