Bottle bombs found at Waiakea school

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Hilo police say three bottle bombs were found at Waiakea Intermediate School.

Custodians found the homemade devices Monday.

State Department of Education spokesman Alex Da Silva tells the Hawaii Tribune-Herald that the bombs were apparently made of soda bottles and Mentos candies.

Police Lt. Melvin Yamamoto said officers did not determine what chemicals were in the plastic bottles.

Two had already exploded. The third was safely discharged.

Police say they've opened an investigation into possession of prohibited weapons.
