MURDER TRIAL OF FEDERAL AGENT BEGINS

    Opening statements were made in day 1 of the murder trial of federal agent Christopher Deedy. The central question in this case: was Deedy acting in self-defense when he fired the fatal shot that killed Kollin Elderts? Jim Mendoza lays out the arguments of the prosecution and defense.  

NATIONAL GUARD FURLOUGHS

     More than 1,000 full-time members of the Hawaii National Guard will be furloughed 1 day a week, starting today, due to federal budget cuts. The furloughs equal a 20-percent reduction of their income.  Mileka Lincoln has more details.

NEW MEDICAL EXAMINER

   Honolulu has a new chief medical examiner for the first time in nearly 4 years. Dr. Christopher Happy, a northern California forensic pathologist, has been chosen by Mayor Caldwell.  The City has had to raise the salary of the ME to $250,000 to attract qualified candidates.

SFO CRASH LATEST

  Data from 2 flight recorders show what may have caused the Boeing 777 to crash during landing at the San Francisco Airport. South Korean translators are helping federal investigators interview the crew of the jet to find out what went wrong.
