Mandatory furloughs impact Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

With the implementation of mandatory furloughs across the government work force starting next week, various services and facilities at installations in Hawaii will be impacted directly and indirectly, according to Navy Region Hawaii.

Furloughs are expected to be in effect for 11 weeks from July 8 through Sept. 30.

In a news release, Navy Region Public Affairs says that many offices at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) will be closed on Mondays or Fridays. DOD civilian staff members are not permitted to volunteer or work extra hours during the furlough period, so there will be a decrease in services at some facilities and offices.

Emergency services, security, shipyard work and child care services are not expected to be affected.

For a range of facilities and services impacted – to include Pass and ID, housing and personal property, commissary, medical, and recreation visit:

Rear Adm. Frank Ponds, Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, addressed civilian members of his workforce last month.

"Speaking for Region and MIDPAC, I can tell you that those of us who wear the uniform have great respect and admiration for our hardworking, always-dedicated civilian staff," Ponds said. The fact is – our civilian colleagues are more than just members of our team. They are part of our family, part of our ohana."

Most DoD civilian employees at JBPHH and the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai have received their notices and will take their furlough day either Monday or Friday this week.

These employees are facing a 20 percent reduction in their pay from July until the end of the fiscal year.
