7.3 magnitude quake hits north of Solomon Islands; no tsunami threat to Hawaii

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit north of the Solomon Islands on Sunday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Magnitude 7.0 quakes or greater are capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.

The earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
