UH Hilo students move on to worldwide finals in Microsoft tech competition

Posted: Updated:

(HawaiiNewsNow) - A team from UH Hilo -- beating hundreds of other university teams at the Microsoft Imagine Cup US Finals in California in May -- is now headed to the Worldwide Finals in St. Petersburg, Russia in July.

The Imagine Cup is considered the world's premier student technology competition. Over the past 10 years, more than 1.65 million students from about 190 countries have participated.

The UHH team created an app called "Help Me Help" where users can take pictures during emergency situations like fires, floods and road blocks. The images are immediately sent to first responders and everyone who signed up for the service in that community. Hawaii Civil Defense already had a discussion with the students about using the app.

Imagine Cup is a global, yearlong competition that culminates in a Worldwide Finals event. Worldwide finalists will also have the chance to apply for Microsoft Imagine Cup Grants as part of a three-year, $3 million investment by Microsoft to help students turn their ideas into reality.
