West Nile cases in Davidson Co. far outpacing previous year

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Be sure to pack mosquito repellant if you head outside to have a picnic or watch the fireworks this week.

Metro Health Department officials announced Tuesday five new batches of mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus.

Three of those batches were collected in Bordeaux, near the intersection of Drakes Branch Road and Kings Lane.

Another was captured in Donelson, near the intersection of Fernbrook Lane and McGavock Pike.

And one was trapped in West Meade, near the intersection of Harding Pike and Percy Warner Boulevard.

If it seems like you're hearing about more mosquitoes with West Nile this year, you are. At this point last year, there had been only one batch testing positive for the virus in Davidson County, but just since May 1 of this year, there have been 15 positive batches.

In all of last year, Metro Health had a total of 22 batches of mosquitoes test positive for the virus.

Right now, health officials have no plans to spray for mosquitoes.

Despite the surge in the number of mosquitoes to test positive, there have been no reported human cases of West Nile this year.

Remember to reduce mosquito breeding areas near your home by eliminating all standing water in your yard, including flower pots, bird baths and clogged gutters.
