HONOKAA, Hawaii (AP) - Two men are under arrest after a calf was found shot and skinned on a Big Island organic farm.

The farm manager says they were just trying to put an injured calf "out of its misery."

Jason Williams and Lonnie Knutson were taken into custody on suspicion of livestock theft and carrying an unloaded firearm. Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports police have until Tuesday afternoon to charge them or release them.

Puuala Farm & Ranch manager Zack Gibson says the men are volunteers learning about organic farming. He says they should have contacted the calf's owner but they didn't mean to commit a crime.

He says the calf was injured in a gulch and they shot it. He says they were trying not to be wasteful by skinning it for meat.
