HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 43-year-old homeless man who has been charged with stealing a dump truck and taking it for a joy ride around Waikiki remains in police custody.

Allen Pitts was charged Monday evening with three counts if criminal property damage.

Officers followed Pitts after he allegedly stole the vehicle Saturday evening from an address on Kapahulu Avenue and proceeded to hit two marked police cars and several parking meters at Kapiolani Park.

Police say Pitts then ditched the vehicle and tried to swim away, but was arrested about an hour and a half later near San Souci Beach.

He is being held on $75,000.
