HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii's Freeway Service Patrol is expanding.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports the service that's free to motorists in distress will expand Monday to cover the H-1 freeway three miles east to Ainakoa Avenue in Waialae.

The Department of Transportation says Freeway Service Patrol trucks will have new bumpers that can push stalled cars off roadways faster

Freeway Service Patrol routes cover about 29 miles of freeway.

The patrol was launched in June 2009 and costs about $3 million annually.

The federal government pays about 90 percent.

The state Department of Transportation says the patrol has assisted vehicles 36,000 times. About 23 percent of the assists were for flat tires.
