Parents encouraged to pledge more focus on kids' education

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

When school starts up again, many parents will be asked to make a commitment to their child's success and actually sign on the dotted line.

The state now requires all Title 1 schools to draw up contracts designed to encourage parental involvement.

Title 1 schools are those which receive federal money and serve a high percentage of low-income students.

The contracts will be signed by teachers, parents and students, and the Franklin Special Schools District has already drawn up its version of the contract.

Teachers there will be expected to create a respectful, caring and safe classroom setting.

Parents are expected to show an interest in their child's education by attending school functions, reviewing homework and feeding kids a good, nutritious breakfast.

And students are expected to read every day outside of school time and be respectful to other students and adults.

While signing the contract is encouraged, it is not required for parents, and there is no penalty if they don't.
