UH committee begins search for new president

HONOLULU (AP) - The chairman of a selection committee of University of Hawaii regents says the group will seek a new college president with strong ties to the state but may look outside academia.

Chairman John Holzman tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he believe there should be a strong working assumption that the committee will seek candidates with a strong islands connection even if they don't currently live in Hawaii.

The seven-member committee is seeking a replacement for M.R.C. Greenwood.

Her contract was signed through July 2015 but Greenwood in May announced she was retiring to deal with health problems and spend more time with family.

Holzman estimates the search will take up to 10 months.

A separate group of regents is seeking an interim president to serve after Greenwood retires Aug. 31.
